Project Management Simulation

Are you running software projects that are 6 months or more in duration?

Do you find that there seems to be less real insight and control of the project as it progresses?

Are you interested in exploring some of the root causes for this loss of control?

This Project Management Simulation allows participants to condense a 10 month project into a half day exercise, exposing the outcomes of their decisions without having to wait for months to elapse.

What is the PM Simulation?

The Project Management Simulation is an interactive session that allows individuals or teams to make project management decisions. Acting as a project manager, you allocate your budget of time. The simulation then models the project outcomes of this allocation in terms of resulting Scope, Schedule, Cost and Quality.

Typical Performance snapshot - click to enlargeUsing industry data from a number of projects, the simulation game demonstrates the common patterns of failure that trap project teams, leading to schedule slippage, budget overruns and quality problems.

Post simulation analysis and discussion allows participants to tie their decisions to the outcomes and provides participants an opportunity to consider the big picture that only becomes apparent when we condense the project lifecycle down into one focused session.

On completion of the facilitated session, participants should:

  • Have an understanding of the cause and effect relationships between decisions made early in the project and outcomes at the end of the project,
  • Understand the need for balance between the allocation of resources across different project activities,
  • Be able to recognize the common patterns of project failure.

Expert facilitation and analysis of the results of this Project Management Simulation arms participants with the framework necessary to lay down the foundation for a solid project.

An effective tool to stimulate thought and participation, the session offers the insight of lessons learned without the pain of actual project failure. This can be effectively used to bring a team together at the initiation of a new project, to re-synchronize the team in the midst of a project, or serve as the basis for discussion as part of a project retrospective.

Audience

The Project Management Simulation can be used to facilitate sessions for anyone involved in projects, including developers, project managers, end users, sponsors and senior management. The simulation can be played by individuals or in team format for groups of up to 20 participants.

The total cost for this half-day service is $1750 for up to 20 participants, contact us for pricing for larger groups.
