Core Project Management

The role of the Project Manager is often placed on a pedestal, surrounded by certifications and a decreed ‘ownership’ of major initiatives. In reality, though, we are all involved in projects, every day.

Indeed, the most effective projects are those where everyone involved works together toward a solution, rather than having one leader drive the masses.

This interactive 1-day workshop explores the core elements of project management, from a practical perspective. The workshop shows that while it may take extensive training and experience to master all the nuances, these core elements are easily within anyone’s grasp.

Armed with these core skills, we can all look at everything on our plate in a different way, become more focused in our efforts, and reap many of the benefits of project management (without the challenges of certification). Even if we are not the designated PM, this awareness can make us effective participants in the projects we are involved in.

Much of the session will be based on your experience, whether in formal projects or in the rest of your life, so be prepared for interesting and engaging discussion.

This workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • The Bounding Box: understanding the limits, priorities, and stakeholders for a project, and clearly stating what success really means.
  • Estimating our Work: practical pointers to help us understand the nature of estimates, and how we can use this to our advantage.
  • Building a Plan: working together to build the story of how the project is expected to play out, and recognizing that this is not the end of the plan.
  • Managing Risk: thinking ahead about what possible threats and opportunities, and working to make sure you get more of the latter than the former.
  • Change Happens: taking that original story and working as a team to ensure the goals are achieved by adjusting the path as required.
  • Improving Along the Way: learning from our mistakes and reinforcing our strengths as a core part of every project we run.

This workshop will be valuable for all the participants in projects, which really means anyone that wants to achieve goals in a team environment.
